Crop and center your photo.


Photo images must be no smaller than 210 pixels by 210 pixels. Larger images are fine, and will automatically be scaled down after they are submitted.

Submit your ID card photo

Complete the following steps to submit your ID card photo:

Acceptable Photo

Good photo example

This photo would be accepted. The background is clear, the subject is looking forward, and the lighting casts no shadows.

Unacceptable Photo

Poor photo example

This photo would be rejected.

Step 1: Choose an acceptable photo

Choose a color digital png, gif, jpg, or jpeg photo file no larger than 2 MB. You must be the only person in the photo. The photo should be well-lit, free of shadows, and have a solid white or light background. Hats and sunglasses are not allowed, and your eyes should be in view and open. Try to reduce glare from eyeglasses as much as possible.

Step 2: Upload photo

Click Upload a file. Navigate to the photo and double-click to upload it. The photo-cropping tool opens when the photo has been received and processed.

Step 3: Crop photo

Click your photo and drag to select the area from your collarbone to the top of your head. Reposition and resize the selection box as desired. When you are satisfied with your selection, click Submit for approval.

Step 4: Photo review and notification

You will be notified by email when your photo is accepted or rejected. If the photo is accepted, the email will provide instructions for pick up. If the photo is rejected, the email will explain why. Notification is usually sent within two business days. If you have not been notified about the status of your photo after five business days, please submit a HelpSU request.

Pick up your ID card

  • Card pickup requires an appointment.
  • Students, Faculty, Staff and Postdoctoral Scholars can schedule appointments in our Appointment tool.
  • Incoming freshmen and new transfer students: Pick up your ID card when you check in for New Student Orientation.
  • Summer Session students: Pick up your ID card as the Summer Session Orientation.
  • Graduate Medical Education (GME) Residents and Fellows: Pick up your ID card at your GME Orientation.
  • All other students (unless otherwise advised by your residence or your department coordinating your early arrival) should schedule an appointment to pick up your ID card as early as two weeks prior to the start of your first term from the Stanford University ID Card Office.
  • An appointment and a government-issued photo ID are required to pick up your card.
